This electrically conductive epoxy possesses two distinctive characteristics; reworkability and long-term stability of the filler material.

Electrically Conductive Epoxy with Copper Germanide Powder

      This article discloses a new formulation of an electrically
conductive epoxy composite material, which is based on a mixture of a
reworkable epoxy as the polymer matrix, and copper germanide powder
as a filler material.  This electrically conductive epoxy possesses
two distinctive characteristics; reworkability and long-term
stability of the filler material.

      Electrically conductive epoxy materials are typically made of
electrically insulating polymer-matrices and electrically conductive
filler materials.  Since the environmental sensitivities of the
filler materials, such as oxidation or corrosion characteristics,
affect seriously the long-term performance of the conductive epoxy, a
replacement of the conventional filler materials, copper, silver or
nickel particles, is desirable.  In addition, a limitation of
conductive epoxies vis-a-vis conventional solder is the lack of a
rework process, which is a requirement for most component assembly
applications.

      In this invention, a new formulation of a conductive epoxy is
disclosed, which addresses the above-mentioned problems.  The new
formulation is based on a reworkable epoxy as a polymer- matrix and
the copper germanide powder as a filler material.  The reworkable
epoxy can be dissolved in various solvent mixtures (patent pending).
