Expert System to Select Connectors for Printed Circuit Boards

An expert system for selecting connectors for printed
circuit board design is described.

An expert system is used to select connectors for printed
circuit board assembly.  The expert system is linked to a connector
data base to make the selection.  It displays the selected connectors
based on input from users.  The expert system is composed of a
knowledge base with eleven Focus Control Blocks (FCBs) of facts and
rules.

The expert system operates on an interactive mode shown in the
figure.  The main selection menu 1 provides the user with various
choices for selecting connectors.  These are selection by
identification numbers 2, selection by connector type 3 and selection
by board configuration 4. The selection is made by the user answering
a series of questions.  After the input is complete, the system
searches for connectors meeting the input requirements from a
connector data base.  If a connector meeting the criteria is found,
the program will display the findings 5.  The program is designed to
trace back to the original main selection menu through the change
parameters 6.
