Tracking small objects or a large number of objects within a group visually is difficult on the human eye.

A software system that monitors the video feed from an airport could automatically detect baggage left alone and standing still for a long period of time. In addition it could track individuals who have occupied the same space for an abnormal amount of time. The best way to flag these items is to make them glow a certain color... with progressively more alarming and attention getting hues and colors. In this case a Halo would dynamically indicate a variable (stationary time) through a colored hue. In this way the rest of the data is still available while the information is effectively conveyed.

Recently the National Hockey League has implemented a visualization for helping viewers track the puck. Using visualization software a trail is added to the puck. This technique has dramatically increased the number of people who watch and enjoy hockey. Ratings for the NHL have increased over 20% by some estimates. Tracking small objects is not limited to NHL viewing. Tracking these objects can be found in such diverse areas from golf viewing, to tactical combat simulations, to analysis of crash reliability data. Speed of an object is often an important piece of information. Analyzing this data in real time is very difficult and new techniques are required.
