The major requirement for medical devices is reliability and therapeutic adequacy.

In addition, as oxygen therapy is followed during a major part of the day, devices for delivering oxygen have to meet ambulatory requirements (low weight, long autonomy, handy to carry…). As this therapy concern both hospital and homecare, devices are often manipulated by  the patient himself, so it has to be user-friendly (few and simple adjustments and connections). Discretion of devices is another key point (noise, design), in particular for homecare patients.

Because of this ambulatory and home care requirements, we have had to think to sensors place and to data transmission. Sensors would preferably be discrete and connected to the nasal cannula, whereas data would preferably be along existing hoses or wireless transmitted.

There are three major focuses for oxygen delivery improvements:

-                     Triggering of oxygen delivery,

-                     On-demand pulse dose delivery based on physiological signals, and

-                     Reporting information to physicians and patients

Today, the existing On-Demand Gas Delivery Devices use physiological signals linked to respiration and technical options for sensing them.

The main signals are inhalation and exhalation signal that are sensed by flow, by breathing movements or by other ways; respiratory orders sensed on the phrenic nerve, blood oxygenation, physical activity and CO2 expired.
