In one embodiment, a contact less split top 1.5t 8channel phased array wrist coil according to this invention comprises an 8Ch phased array for wrist imaging, offering a large S-I coverage area (~140mm), a higher SNR (20-30%) and ASSET capability. The coil has a split top design without connectors and hence offers more reliability.
SPLITTOP 1.5T 8CHANNEL PHASED ARRAY WRIST COIL
 This invention relates generally, to wrist coil for use in MRI machine, and more particularly to, a 1.5 T 8channel phased array wrist coil for use in MRI machine.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
 Multi-channel phased array coil plays a vital role in obtaining a higher SNR and fast parallel imaging (ASSET) capability compared to normal single channel surface coils. The increasing pressure in clinical practice to increase patient throughput prompted the development of faster imaging techniques like ASSET, SENSE, and SMASH etc. Parallel imaging makes use of the sensitive distribution of phased array RF coils to reduce the number of phase encoding steps and MR imaging time. Since some of the available 1.5T product offerings in the market provides 8RF channels, there is a requirement for developing an 8Ch small extremity coils. At present there is no 8Ch wrist coil available in the market. The importance of split top model and phased array technique is given below.
Splittop RF Coils are made for easy positioning of the patient anatomy. For non-uniform anatomy (Wrist and Hand), a split top design improves the fill factor inside the coil volume, thereby improving the SNR. For the coil design under consideration, a split top design will reduce the coil cross section which will add to the SNR gain.
 Phased Array Coil: Phased array RF coils have multiple coil elements along the length of the coil or around the volume of the coil. These elements are electrically isolated from one other with the help of various decoupling techniques. Predominantly used decoupling techniques are magic overlap and transformer decoupling.
 The 4-channel high-resolution wrist coil from MRID is considered the industry standard in terms of it high SNR. The main weakness of the existing 4ch-wrist coil in the market is the limited S-I coverage together with the non-versatility. Due to the tapered shape, the coil allows to examine the carpal area only, from about 2cm above the top metacarpal bones to halfway down to the knuckles. The baseline coil does not allow scanning the knuckles, and marginally can allow scanning the fingers by reversing the patient position from Feet first to Head first. The main aim of this invention is to overcome the above-mentioned difficulties.
 This is an invention of a 8Ch Phased array wrist coil which covers a large volume (about 14cm S-I covering wrist (meta carpal region) and hand (knuckles) of hand) with split top design for patients comfort.
