There are a variety of instances during coiled tubing operations where it is beneficial to have real-time knowledge of the actual downhole condition as opposed to inferring the downhole condition from surface measurements. The traditional manner of accomplishing this is to use an e-line disposed of inside the CT, which is supported with a wireline truck for data acquisition. Additionally, in order to be able to take the measurements while RIH or POOH a collector must be used. The collector is typically a slip ring configuration that maintains the electrical connection regardless of reel orientation. The implementation of a collector not only adds expense but also adds another facet to the unit maintenance.
Another means of implementing real-time downhole measurements is to utilize fiber optic technology, which offers reduced cost and weight. However, the fiber optic implementation is also plagued by maintaining the connection between the downhole sensor and the surface signal conditioning unit. The conventional approach is to utilize the fiber optic collector, which is commercially available. This approach adds cost and complexity to the system as well as degrades the system performance because of the large insertion losses associated with fiber optic rotary joints. Consequently, another approach that addressed the deficiencies of the fiber optic rotary joint was identified, implemented and tested. This approach was to allow the signal conditioning equipment to rotate with the coiled tubing reel and use wireless communication to relay the data to the surface acquisition equipment.
