Converter makes word Processors diskette compatible

A desktop media converter that permits 20 leading models of word processors and personal computers to become diskette compatible has been introduced by the OEM systems group of Itek Corporation's Composition Systems Division.

The Itek Converter translates media from one word processor or personal computer to the format of other, incompatible word processors or personal computers. It can translate media from any of 20 such devices now on the market.

Users can key material on one system, store it on 5 ~A-in. or 8-in. diskettes, and load it into the Converter, which has been attached to another word processing workstation. The user selects the equipment model for which the data is to be translated, then loads the translation program diskette. The Converter makes the change at transfer speeds of up to 10,000 characters in less than 11 seconds. Data is transferred asynchronously using a TTY-style protocol over RS-232- compatible data lines.

The Converter can read single- and doubledensity diskettes, hard- or soft-sectored, singleor double-sided.

At present, the Itek Converter has translation programs for IBM Displaywriter models 1, 2, and 20; Wang models 5, 20, 25, and 30; CPT models 6000, 8000, 8100, and 8500; NBI models 3000 and 3000S; Philips models 2000, 2001, and 2000E; DEC model W78; and Xerox model 860. The Converter can also translate material from the Hewlett-Packard 125, Osborne PC, and Wordstar CP/M for both 8-in. and 5A-in. diskettes.

The Converter, complete with two translation programs, is available for $ 11,500 in single-unit quantities for evaluation purposes. Shipping is 60 days ARO. Additional translators can be purchased separately at $800 each, with OEM quantity discounts available.
