This invention relates to communication system architectures, especially for heavy vehicles. In one embodiment, bus coordinators, which each controls a respective communication bus, are interconnected by a backbone network for providing fast and reliable inter bus data transmission. In a further embodiment, the most critical communication bus in the vehicle is doubled, wherein one bus is used for information transmission and the other is used for control message transmission. In an even further embodiment, various functions are grouped into subnets, wherein communication within the subnet is performed on a separate bus, wherein communication on a main bus is substantially reduced. In an even further embodiment, a power-saving and robust wake-up procedure is disclosed, wherein each control unit is connected to a central wake-up unit controlling the wake-up procedure.
