Abstract

In an aphaeresis system, fluid pump speed may be controlled by a PID (Proportional, Integral, Differential) control loop. When either an occlusion or air appears in the flow stream, the pump integration error can be analyzed to detect whether the error is due to an air block or occlusion, by observing an abrupt increase in the detected integration error. This concept may also be applied to the detection of hemolysis and possibly hematomas.
