Process and Thread Sampling - Target Selection in Interrupt Mode
Disclosed is a method for producing call flow reports using hardware counter interrupts or time based interrupts to identify the threads for which to capture the context information. The information captured by the interrupt handler is used by sampler threads to retrieve and record the context information to produce reports.
Time based profiling, for example, the Tprof application, in Performance Inspector(*) has been used to profile applications and produce reports. By instrumenting the kernel, other profiling applications, such as, OProfile, a system profiler for Linux(**) have produced reports that attempt to follow the calling sequence and produce reports that identify calling sequences. This technology is also used by debuggers when traps/breakpoints are taken. However, these approaches do not provide context support for methods that are being executed interpretively.
