This disclosure introduces a method to inspect a given software image and provide a numeric probability that the image is a usable match to a known image. By taking a user specified sample of a specific instance of installation media, it is possible to apply heuristics to other media images in order to determine if they are valid within the same metadata driven context. This allows the possibility for a customer to utilize any working installation media image - even those produced after the metadata was constructed.

When packaging and provisioning composite applications, installation media are often handled as separate entities and represented using metadata. This is driven by multiple issues, the most common being:

Licensing: A provider of a composite application may not be the provider of the underlying components and therefore has no legal rights to distribute the media.

Footprint: Modern application installation media routinely expand into the gigabyte range. Packaging several applications as one binary deliverable leads to impractically large images.

Once decoupled, the installation media must eventually be accessed and manipulated by packaging and provisioning tools in order to perform installations. Recognizing that a specific set of installation media matches the metadata driving the tool poses issues:

The images may be distributed in different media form: CD, DVD, electronic, etc., all which have a unique footprint.

Using a specific part number (such as CD label) can be too restrictive. Subsequent releases of the installation media may be valid but would be disallowed due to different part number.

Exact byte counts are not acceptable as changing a readme or other inconsequential part will result in a mismatch when in fact the image is usable.
