A well system comprising a first completion and a second completion and configured to convey a chemical downhole via a downhole control line connection. The first completion may comprise a first control line and a sand control screen and the second completion comprising a second control line. The second completion may be engaged down hole to a previously run first completion. During engagement between the first and second completions, the first control line may be coupled to the second control line, thereby establishing a fluid pathway. De-scaling fluid may be injected through the first and second control lines to restore or maintain a level of porosity of the sand control screen. The upper control line may be communicatively coupled to a chemical injection pump and chemical storage tank located on the surface.

[0001] The present invention relates generally to a system configured to facilitate injection of a de-scaling agent, and more particularly to a system and method to facilitate chemical injection via a downhole connection.


[0002] Hydrocarbon fluids such as oil and natural gas are obtained from a subterranean geologic formation, referred to as a reservoir, by drilling a well that penetrates the hydrocarbon-bearing formation. In order to produce the hydrocarbon fluids or other desirable fluids (such as water in the case of a water well), the open hole bore produced by the drilling operation is completed. Completion of a well may involve placing various valves, screens, and tubing (among other components) downhole in order to direct and control the flow of fluids between the reservoir and the surface. However, in some cases, the length and conditions of the well require that a first completion stage located in a lower portion of the well be mated, coupled or engaged to a second completion stage located in an upper portion of the well.

[0003] Many well completions incorporate one or more control lines, such as optical, electrical, or fluid control lines configured to carry signals to or from components of the downhole completion. The completion of wells in two or more stages, however, can create difficulties in forming dependable and repeatable control line connections between adjacent completion assemblies.

[0004] In some multi-stage completions, sand control screens are used to help filter out particulates from the fluids produced from the formation. Over time, barium sulfate scale builds up on the screens and reduces the flow rate of fluid produced into the well system. Removing the scale conventionally would require an intervention in which tubing would be lowered through the interior of the well to deliver a de-scaling chemical treatment to the area surrounding the screen. In some cases, smaller diameter production tubing may be inserted into the well with an associated pipe for conveying chemical injection treatment solution, along with a loss in overall diameter for producing desired formation fluid to the surface. Unfortunately, interventions interrupt production schedules and are very costly to perform. Additionally, running a secondary piping system through the interior of the completion may reduce the overall production flow capacity of the well, also increasing costs. Currently, there is no convenient, low cost method of de-scaling sand control or other types of screens in multi-stage completions.
