Various file types are associated with applications that can handle the respective file type. Administrators can have (or roll out) more than just one application that can handle the respective file types, and depending on various circumstances like security risk, vulnerability, power management, etc., can activate policy or alter system settings to switch the default handler from one application to the other. Thus, the need for either rolling our an untested patch or not rolling out a patch at all is mitigated. This balances business disruption and security with giving users less power hungry application options to view the data.
