In the cities, especially in the downtown, we often meet the parking issue. Sometimes, it is very hard for us to find a parking space. What we can refer to is some denotes in the downtown to show how many park spaces are available in the parking lots nearby. However, these numbers do not make sense sometimes. For example, it points out that the nearby parking lot has 3 available parking spaces. When you arrive, you find that many cars are lining up in the gate. So in fact there is no available parking space in this parking lot. Also, sometimes all nearby parking lots have no parking space. Just showing zero will not help the drivers to find which one most likely provides a parking space soon. Ideally we should have one really useful number to help the drivers know whether they possibly get a parking space. In this invention, a method and system to get real available parking space number is disclosed. With the deployment of the system, the parking lot can easily provide the real available parking space number for the drivers.

Method and apparatus for accurate parking space calculation

The present invention provides a new method and system to calculate the available parking spaces accurately.

The relevant cars are monitored by the well-positioned cameras all around the parking lot and then therelevant data is collected centrally and timely. An analysis component is introduced to process the incoming data to identify each car involved in the calculation. It also communicates with the existing parking lot management system for some key parking information. Combining all these information, it calculates the available parking spaces. The calculated parking space information is delivered to display component to get it shown to the drivers.

This invention provides a method and system to provide relatively more accurate information for the parking cars.

In Fig.3.1, the system use cameras to monitor the parking lot from all dimensions. There are seven cameras in the figure, but actually there may be more in the whole parking lot. The cameras will monitor the below cars:
1. The moving cars inside the parking lot. It will not monitor the cars which are parked in the parking spaces.
2. The cars that are lining up outside the parking lot.

Then it analyzes the data retrieved by cameras with the information from parking lot management system. It will get the number of parking spaces that will be released soon

and the number of lining up cars. Therefore, the system can figure out the more reliable information, which is accurate number of parking spaces in the parking lot.

In Fig. 3.2, the system is integrated with the parking lots management system and has three key components: Monitor component, Analyze component and Display component.

The parking lots management system can provide below information.

The total parking space number (Assume the number is M )

The total car number inside the parking lot (Assume the number is N ), the cars are check-in not check-out yet.

   The license plate and entry time of all cars inside the parking lot. It can record this information when cars are entering. Then we can get the number of available parking spaces (Assume the number is A) by using the formula: M


Monitor component allocates cameras in the parking lot. The cameras monitor moving cars in the parking lot and the lining up cars outside of parking lot. The image data will be transmitted to next component to be analyzed.
