Disclosed is a system to improve the security of a point of sale station in a retail environment where the scanning and payment transactions take place at two locations. The system incorporates taking a photograph of the customer through a camera built into the touch-screen at the scanning station. The customer’s image is associated with the scanned list of items and facilitates a more secure method of order identification at the time of payment.

In a separated scan and pay checkout system, the customer scans their items at one station, and then goes to another station in the store in order to pay for the transaction. In the past, the pay station has been physically co-located with the scanning equipment, and there was a 1-1 correspondence between the scan station and the pay station.

Current thinking in the industry is for high-volume retailers to install high speed scanners in one location to identify a customer's items, and have another location where the customer pays for the items.

In the typical scenario today, the customer receives a small receipt at the scanning station that identifies their order and stores the information in the transaction in the system; this receipt is used at the second station to complete the payment process.

For the convenience of the customer and to maintain security, the method is improved with the removal of the paper receipt.

The proposed invention is to use the image of the customer as the foundation of transaction identification. At some point in the item scanning process, the customer is requested to touch a screen which actually moves them into a position from which a camera integrated into the touch screen takes their picture.
