The current disclosure is related to a method of product decoration, the method comprising the following steps: 1) providing a product composition comprised of at least one type of magnetic particle; 2) melting said product composition to form a fluid mixture; 3) exposing at least part of the composition to a magnetic field to modify the orientation of the magnetic particles; 4) allowing the composition to cool to room temperature resulting in an increase in viscosity high enough to maintain the magnetically aligned pattern within the product composition.

Product Decoration via Magnetic Alignment


For decorative cosmetics, product presentation is a key element associated with overall product quality. Product developers (in both prestige and mass markets) go to great lengths to deliver a unique look by providing a variety of package embellishments including crystals, special fabrics and lights. The presentation of the product itself is also a primary element of the overall product design. A good example is the intricate designs employed in pressed powder compacts shown in Figure 1. These designs do not necessarily enhance the performance of the cosmetic product but do provide value in the eye of the consumer by enhancing the aesthetic beauty of the finished product.

The object of this disclosure is to provide a unique method for product decoration using magnetic fields to manipulate particle orientation within the finished product composition.

More specifically, the object of this disclosure is to provide a unique method for cosmetic product decoration using magnetic fields to manipulate particle orientation within the finished cosmetic product.

This type of optically variable effect was first demonstrated in US 5,223,360 to produce copy-proof coatings designed for use in security printing applications. The pigments used consisted of a mica substrate coated with black iron oxide or magnetite. Prengel et. al. showed that particle alignment can be manipulated by magnetic force in uncured coatings allowing for the creation of three dimensional images. Following the establishment of the desired flake orientation, the coating is then cured solidifying the image in place.

US 5,364,689 used a similar approach and claimed a painted product with a pattern having three-dimensional appearance formed by aligned non-spherical magnetic particles. The magnetic particles are aligned to be either substantially parallel or non-parallel to the surface. Both US 5,223,360 and US 5,364,689 are limited to coatings applications.

US 6,759,097 (claims methods for magnetic alignment in coatings) and 6,808,806 (claims coated articles) further describe methods and devices for producing images on coated articles via magnetic alignment. The authors demonstrated that magnetic alignment can be achieved in uncured coatings using a variety of magnetic pigments, namely using multi-layer stacked pigments containing a magnetic layer of nickel, cobalt, iron, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, erbium and their alloys or oxides.
