Many IT installations involve delivery of heavy equipment (more that a one person lift) for upgrades of customer servers. Sometimes the parts are shipped flat on a pallet and are eventually placed into the server in the same orientation. In some cases however they must be safely moved from a horizontal orientation to a vertical one to allow installation into the server. Using the submitted process (which does not rely on additional manpower and takes into consideration human limitations) it is now possible for a single customer engineer to upright the part, move it to the customer's server and install it into the frame with greater ease, increased safety and no damage to the part being installed.

Process and Tools to Move a Heavy Electrical Component to the Vertical Position

When shipping a heavy electrical component to a customer IT installation the component is typically sent with the longest side of the component resting flat on a shipping pallet. In some instances, a CE must change the orientation of the component to the vertical position before attempting to install the component. When the weight of the component significantly exceeds the corporate specified limit for a single person lift (39.7 pounds) then a situation exists where a CE could potentially injure themselves or damage the component when trying to place the component into the vertical position. Known solutions to this problem have largely been limited to providing a good hand hold (or holds) on the component and ensuring the product packaging is designed to allow adequate access to the component. This approach does not acknowledge human limitations and requires a level of strength, coordination, and balance that many individuals may not possess. A recent product development cycle highlighted an instance where it was possible for the component to weigh more than the person who was trying to move it. It became apparent that a new approach was needed--an approach that gave the CE some mechanical advantage. This reveals the combination of tools and techniques employed to make it possible for the CE to safely and successfully move a heavy component to an upright, vertical position.
