An electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) system is disclosed. The EFM system comprises transducers and a monitor communicating through Bluetooth wireless interface. A Slate Tablet PC is used as the monitor. The Slate Tablet PC has touch-screen that is ideally suited for fetal monitoring. Further, the Slate Tablet PC has an in-built Bluetooth (BT) adapter. A Bluetooth headset (BTHS) module is used in transducers to communicate wirelessly with the in-built BT adapter in the Slate Tablet PC. The EFM system described herein provides a simple design and low-cost system.

FIELD OF INVENTION
The invention generally relates to fetal monitors and more particularly to a low-cost electronic fetal monitor with wireless transducers.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) system is an ultrasound device used for examining the condition of a baby in the uterus by monitoring the heart rate of the baby. Generally, EFM is performed late in pregnancy or continuously during labor to ensure normal delivery of a healthy baby. EFM can be utilized either externally or internally in the womb.
Conventional EFM systems comprise proprietary monitors. Proprietary monitors elevate integrated cost value of the EFM system. Providers of proprietary systems are restricted from reducing costs as they cannot take advantage of bulk production.
Further, telemetry or wireless EFM systems are based on wireless medical telemetry service (WMTS). Figure 1 depicts conventional EFM systems with three different configurations. The WMTS allocates particular frequency band to the wireless EFM system. However, there are numerous instances of conflict in the frequency band among various wireless medical devices which share the same frequency band. WMTS does not provide mechanisms to resolve such frequency band conflicts. One solution to resolve frequency band conflicts is implementation of a sophisticated protocol like frequency hopping in WMTS. However, such protocols disrupt operation of devices from other providers.
Hence there is a need in the art for an improved EFM system with lower cost and efficient wireless communication.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
An electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) system comprising a Bluetooth headset module in transducers and Slate Tablet PC as monitor is disclosed. The Slate Tablet PC has an in- built Bluetooth adapter to communicate with the Bluetooth headset module of the transducer. All components of the EFM system communicate through Bluetooth wireless interface.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
An Electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) system is disclosed. The EFM system comprises a Bluetooth headset module in transducers and Slate Tablet PC as monitor. FIG. 2 is a schematic representation of the hardware architecture of the EFM system described herein.
