Often in video feeds users desire the ability to comment on the active show. Currently there are no simple means by which to identify a specific area of interest within the video stream and share related comments.

One existing solution is in a system that provides photograph tagging. In that instance, the user defines the shape and segment to tag; however, this is difficult to do on a television and in a live stream. There is some enabling art for this invention, including the ability to generate a snapshot of a television image and certain image manipulation programming.

The disclosed solution is a method to capture the current frame of a live video stream, determine the logical segments of the image, overlay the segment outlines in a semi-transparent map, present the composite image on the video display, and enable the user to select the area of interest and to comment on the specified area. The core idea results in higher user participation.

The process for implementing the invention follows:
1. User hits tag button
2. System captures the current frame as an image in any image format (e.g., Portable Network Graphic (PNG), Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPG))

3. System makes a copy of the image. The system may optionally invert the colors and create a black and white image.

4. System determines the natural segments and area of the image
a. For the image, the system creates a two-dimensional (2D) array of red, green, blue (RGB) values.

b. The system determines the segments by the pixel next to it containing a similar color or value.

c. The system establishes a threshold so light green and green become a logical pairing.

d. The system looks at groups of values and uses a Monte Carlo method of sampling to establish the logical region of the image. [1]

5. System processes the 2D array and determines the pixel layout of the map.
6. System lays out the map. The map leverages a similar feature to the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) Image Map function.

7. System highlights the first map segment in a contrasting color (i.e., contrasting to the background of the image).
