Microblogging, such as that done through social networking websites, has become a popular platform for people to socialize and exchange information. Microblogging sites enforce a maximum length for a post, such as 140 characters. A user can follow many people to keep track of new updates and, in turn, can have many followers. This can get up into the hundreds or thousands for a single user. Due to the limited amount time a user spends on a microblogging site and the number of posts a user can generate each day, continuous tracking of posts is a challenge for many users. While a user can search for postings regarding a specific topic, not knowing what the most recent hot topics are makes it difficult for the user track what might interest them. Thus, a method of automatically generating a microblogging digest that contains topics interesting to a user is needed.

Various services and tools are available to create a digest of microblogging posts from a list of users. Such digests are often provided as web pages, Really Simple Syndication (RSS)/ATOM feeds, or emails. When a user follows numerous posts, these summaries can become quite large and overwhelming, making it difficult for the user to locate useful information.

Other microblogging services provide a user with a list of users that have been associated with a certain topic (e.g., education, travel) and can provide digests of the microblogging posts from those users related to topic keywords that have been manually defined. Posts that may be related, but lack these defined keywords are missed. Also, one list can contain many users, and digests of their posts can also become overwhelmingly large, making it difficult to locate interesting information.

Existing microblogging services such as offer a way for users to tag their posts so that they can be found using a tag search function. [1] Often, these services provide tag-based monitoring capabilities through RSS/ATOM feeds or digest emails. Unfortunately, tagging posts requires extra effort which is often not convenient and may both distract from the conversation and be prone to typographical errors. Monitoring these conversations assumes that the poster and followers agree on what tag values correspond to a topic, which is often not the case. Tags are also included in a message's length and can take away from the ability to communicate the core message.
