The user is allowed to choose a social networking contact whose storage space may be utilized as a backup site. The chosen social networking contact may then accept to provide the storage space to the user for data backup.

Disclosed is a method and system for backing up data based on storage space available with social networking contacts of a user.
The method and system allows the user to back up data using storage space available with the user's social networking contacts. The user logs onto a social networking site and chooses one or more social networking contacts who have indicated that their local storage can be utilized for backing up other people's data. In response to selecting the one or more social contacts, a request is sent to each of the chosen social networking contact, wherein the request specifies that the user wishes to use the storage space for backing up data. The social networking contact may accept or reject the request from the user after considering various parameters.
If the social networking contact accepts the request from the user, the social networking contact specifies available storage space that may be used by the user for the data backup. In an embodiment, the social networking contact may declare the amount of storage space that can be utilized by a third party even before receiving the requests for data backup. The user can also specify the data that needs to be backed up and select a time interval after which the backup operations are initiated automatically. The data that needs to be backed up is compressed and encrypted with a password. In an embodiment, the user may send data to multiple backup sites for ensuring redundancy and thereby having a more robust backup. Moreover, the data that can be split into logical chunks are identified and accordingly split, encrypted and sent to the backup sites of the social networking contacts.
