The proposed Time slot based road sharing system is a reservation system which calculates and assigns time slots to commuter to distribute their use of the traffic infrastructure to soften or totally eliminate the peaks of traffic congestion.

The system consists of four aspects.

Data Collection: Collects the information about infrastructure, end points (source and destinations of travel, popularity), people (address, family, schedule, frequented destinations), vehicle (size, no of passengers), static data (census, school system, normal traffic pattern based on time of the day, day of week, geography), dynamic data (current traffic, event, weather). The data hence collected is stored in a Data Store D1.

Analysis: Analyze the data collected at data collection phase. The analysis uses for following logic: Understand which end points are frequented by commuters, typical times and their impact on routes. It also understands which of the people visit a given end point, giving a view of where the people travel from. With the understanding of impact of each destination on a given route, destinations that share a route are now changed to operate a different time so that people commuting to one destination travel at a different time than people traveling to another destination. This new information is fed back into the system to calculate when people need to leave their homes to reach the respective destinations. This time calculation needs to take into account infrastructure capacity, time preferences of other members of the family and impact on other destinations.

Slot assignment/management: It will manage(assign, cancel, reschedule) the time slots for commuters. An algorithm uses the analysis from analysis phase and calculate the time slots based on commuter's request and issue time slot on commuters devices ( for e.g. RFID).

Post deployment and enforcement: Upon assignment of a time slot, the vehicle will need some kind of device (e.g. RFID) placed at a visible location which can be read by sensor/reader installed at intersections. Intersections will have additional access lanes that will scan these devises to confirm permission to use these special lanes. These sensor/reader detects if specific vehicle should permitted to go on specific route at specific time, if not it will assign fine etc(like take a picture of license plate and send them bill). This system will also collect real time traffic information(like low traffic due to mass lay off, heavy traffic due to opening new companies, weather related information, accident,event) which will be feed in to the Data Store D1 (data stored at data collection phase) periodically.
