Determining alternate routes to a destination

When using a mobile electronic device, such as a mobile phone, a tablet computer, or a dedicated GPS device to determine a route to a destination, it is always helpful if the device provided alternate routes.  

Alternate routes may be determined based on many factors. One such factor is the distance of each route. Typically, shorter routes are preferred. However, an alternate method to determine alternate routes may take into consideration the cost of each route. The cost of a route may be computed based on the fuel efficiency of a vehicle in each section of the route. For example, if a hybrid vehicle is driven on a highway, it will need to use the gas engine, but if it is driven at slow speeds in the city, the hybrid vehicle can use only electrical energy. The same can be applied for public transportation. Multiple transit services may offer routes to the destination, however, in some circumstances, utilizing a particular mode of transit may be more costly. One such example is in London. Using the tube, or the light transit system is significantly more expensive than using the bus system.

Another consideration is the popularity of the route. One method to determine of the route is by utilizing crowd sourced information. One example of such information may be the number of geo-tagged photos that are uploaded on popular photo sharing services along a particular route.
