An elastic sock is placed around the exterior of the left atrial appendage. If the atrium fills, it would allow the appendix to be filled at a certain pressure. Yet, if the pressure drops due to the opening of the mitral valve, the exterior elastic sock will fully compress the appendix preventing blood being left in the appendix to form thrombi.
