Most of companies have lots of devices in their server room. It is a critial task to monitoring and repair any malfunctional device in time. But many current IT monitoring systems don't provide a good solution to identify the physical location of a device when an error happens. A server room floor map that is integrated with the monitoring system can help the user on finding a specific device. This disclosure describes a novel method to accomplish this task. The method described here requires minimal manual efforts when setting up the server room map and updating a device's location in the future. It is also very cheap compared to solutions like RFID. Instead of marking every device with a location tag such as RFID or locator described in the following, this solution uses one USB device to mark all devices. The USB device is plugged in once every time a device's location needs to be updated. It initiates an event with location information and sends over to the monitoring system. Therefore, a device's logical entity is able to associate with its physical location and displayed on a map.

Systems and methods to map a server room

When an error is reported from a system management software, as an IT administrator, it is hard to find the actual physical machine in a large server room, especially when the managed system has no location information or there's no map for the server room. It will be very helpful to provide a map to guide the IT staff to find any physical server from a management system.

The current methods to map a server room are either expensive or involved too much manual efforts. For example, the solution using RFID tags needs many tags and readers mounted on machines and racks. And the manual method to keep the record of a server and its location is error-prone. Also, any wireless solution will introduce extra security risks to the server room. Most importantly, current solutions are all focus on one special device for one server to provide the location information, which is not necessary.
