Disclosed are a method and system to use multiple identifiers to reconcile and deduplicate metadata in a repository. Instead of using a single semantic identifier for an object, the method defines multiple possible semantic identifiers. These identifiers are assigned a particular priority order. When reconciling metadata, the semantic identifiers are checked starting with the highest priority definition. If a particular metadata asset cannot be reconciled using the first semantic identifier, then the process is to check the second identifier, and so on.
