Adaptive Distributed Cloud Environment Integration

Today's networked computer systems include a large variety of different platforms distributed across a wide geographical area. These large systems are created using dedicated hardware and software resources that are expensive to deploy and maintain. The trend is to move these systems from dedicated infrastructure resources to shared for higher utilization and lower per-machine capital and operating expenses. Determining the resources to provision when moving systems from dedicated to shared infrastructure can be time-consuming and error-prone, especially for legacy systems with multiple applications sharing infrastructure that have been in place for some time and for which little is known.

    Described is a method for discovering, analyzing, and describing the configuration and topology of an existing networked system to simplify adoption of a shared infrastructure. The method programmatically produces a system descriptor with the required infrastructure information to duplicate the existing dedicated environment on shared infrastructure, including the computing and storage resources and connectivity between them. Programmatically producing this descriptor improves the speed and accuracy at which the system can be described, significantly reducing the time to move to shared infrastructure while reducing errors.

    When a customer has hardware and software components in their environment, they want to integrate it into a distributed cloud environment. The idea is to: 1. have a flexible robust method to identify existing hardware and software and perform its upgrade strategy into a distributed cloud environment. This includes, but not limited to: scanning for open ports, identify usable services, virtualization components, licenses, user data, security policies, dependencies, and resource limitations.

2. construct a useable template. The template would be some sort of mapping or a metadata description of their environment composed in terms of cloud infrastructure.

3. identify most cost-efficient cloud integration strategy (resource, money, time, HA support, etc.) based on customer requirements, and

a. integrate existing components into a distributed cloud environment

b. build a new cloud using new and existing resources

c. pull existing cloud resources and form a new cloud

    Creating a system descriptor requires identifying the compute resources, their storage requirements, and the connectivity (or lack of) between each other. This is best accomplished using a directed graph with nodes representing network addresses and links the connectivity between them. Network addresses are grouped by the network interface card they are bound to.
