When a user performs an internet search, results are often many; however, not all results are of good quality. For example, search results might be outdated, contain too much information, or be presented in a way which makes it difficult to find the needed points. Poor quality search results do not help the user.

A method and system is needed that allows a user to easily understand the quality of different items in a set of results.

The novel contribution is a method and system that define the quality of the information returned for a given topic for each search result. Each search result (i.e. Uniform Resource Locator (URL)) is accompanied by an indicator of the quality of the result. The search provider also considers the quality of result topic and ranks the web pages in the result set. The user can define the priority of different topics' quality levels, and then the system accordingly displays the search results. For example, if the user is searching for "Business Intelligence", different contents related to "Business Intelligence" are shown in different web pages. In this case, "Vendor of Business Intelligence" is the priority for the user. (Figure 1)

Thus, along with each search result, the user can view the different topics found on the URL associated with that result. Along with the displayed topic, the system shows the level of quality for said topic. Multiple URLs might contain the same or similar content. To resolve this, the system provides a ranking of the web page based on the quality of the content relative to the other search results, aided by user-defined priorities. In addition, if the content of a web page appears to be outdated, then the system can alert the owner of the page that an update is needed.

To implement the method and system in a preferred embodiment, every sentence is a function of keywords and every paragraph is a function of sentences. Thus, it stands that:
Sentence = f(keywords)

Paragraph = f(Sentence) and hence Paragraph = f(Keywords)

A topic is a set of keywords in which every pair of keywords has a relationship strength defined. For each different topic, the relationship factors are different. Thus, a topic can be one or more paragraphs.
