The present invention proposes a technique for improving performances of discharge system of a centrifugal compressor. The technique includes more than one scroll configuration in the discharge system of centrifugal compressor. The technique divides the scroll into two or more scrolls. Each of the scrolls embraces only a portion of the diffuser. The technique improves performances of the discharge system of centrifugal compressor and eliminates radial load on the last compressor wheel.
The present invention relates generally to centrifugal compressor, and more particularly to a discharge system configuration in the centrifugal compressor.
Typically, the last stage of a section of a centrifugal compressor delivers fluid flow in a single scroll that has an extension of 360°. In certain configuration the scroll size is very big which impacts bearing span, casing size, performance and symmetry of pressure in a diffuser. As a result, a radial load is acquired on the last compressor wheel. A conventional technique includes double volute casing of a centrifugal pump. The double volute casing includes a main portion which has first and second volutes extending along arcs of not more than 180 degrees. The outer diameter of a main portion equals or approximates the outer diameter of the end of a first volute, and such end is adjacent to the start of a second volute whose end communicates with an outlet nozzle of the main portion.
Another conventional technique includes a twin-scroll turbocharger which includes a rear scroll, a front scroll, a scroll throat part for partitioning the two scrolls, a turbine blade caused to rotate by exhaust gas, and a turbine housing for forming outer-peripheral section of the turbine blade.
One other conventional technique includes volute shaped pump casing for a centrifugal pump.
As depicted in Figure 1, the double volute casing design used in centrifugal pumps equalizes pressure around an impeller and reduces unbalanced loading on bearings. This is accomplished with two similar flow channels which have outlets 180 degrees apart. However, the above mentioned conventional techniques neither provide reduced bearing span nor reduces casing size of discharge system.
It would be desirable to have an efficient technique for improving performances of discharge system of a centrifugal compressor.
