The core idea below introduces a method to improve the test accuracy and efficiency in translation verification test. 1. Render a editable user interface for all extracted Translatable text 2 The translatable text is modified and auto-saved in centralized PII repository 3. Translated text can be loaded back to deployed site for verification.

A Method to Improve Translation Accuracy and Test Coverage by Live Translation and Verification

Globalization is an important phase in software development, which mainly includes translation of text on user interface, pop-up help text, and runtime messages. Translation accuracy and completeness has a great impact on the quality of software products. Getting good understanding of a software product is prerequisite for translators to start the translation. Validation of the translated product by both the translators and the developers ensures translation

accuracy and completeness.

The traditional organization structure in a company leads to isolated translation team and development team. The developers extract the texts to be translated into a package (named PII) and send the package to the translators. The translators use the package as input and translate it into the target language.

The translator may be lack of context of the message, and need to communicate with the developers back and forth for questions, problems, and verification. The ineffective communication costs lots of effort on both sides and jeopardizes accuracy and completeness of the translation. Also it's hard to ensure 100% test coverage from user interface, e.g. error message.

Here we introduce a live translation and verification method to resolve above issues.

Core Ideas

In this live translation and verification method, translatable text in whatever user interface is made editable so that the translator can work on it directly.

When a piece of translatable text is being modified, all the related content that is currently invisible (and might not be visible in any places) is then displayed and made available for translation. In particular, messages, such as error messages, which are not contained visible in the page, can also be displayed under associated page elements. Then the translator can easily translate the messages based on original message and context.

The PII files for the translatable content is automatically or manually modified as soon as the translation is saved. Thus it can be loaded when this page is refreshed in target la...
