Disclosed is a carpooling system that associates potential passengers with drivers interested in sharing their car without the need to establish central point of communication and without the need to plan journey in advance.

Today commuting is very often inefficient:
people who drive by car often have several seats unoccupied,
the more people drive by car the worse are traffic jams and air pollution, people who use public transportation means often waste time waiting for their bus/tram/train,
public transportation means are often overcrowded.

Very popular solution to these problems is carpooling - idea of joining people to drive together using private cars belonging to one of the participants. The main problem with carpooling as it is known today is that the journey needs to be planned in advance - either the driver must somehow advertise his plans to drive specific route to gather passengers or someone who needs a lift must let know potential drivers about his desired route. Another problem with current carpooling solutions is that they all need some central point where information between drivers and potential passengers is exchanged - it can be an internet portal, a server for mobile applications or even a traditional message board.

There are also solutions that offer near-realtime association between drivers and passengers (e.g. map view of carpooling system participants in the neighborhood) but they need mobile internet connection and GPS positioning. To overcome problems described earlier proposed is a system consisting of applications for mobile devices that use ad-hoc WiFi connectivity to associate drivers with potential passengers.

Advantages of this approach:
no need to plan a journey in advance, no need to establish a central server, no need for mobile internet connection, no need for GPS positioning.

The following situation describes how the proposal works; Alice is a driver who drives along a road, Bob is a person staying by the side of the road who needs a lift.
