A "Lipstick"-style valve (Fig. 3) is used to continuously depressure a slurry of crushed slag and water coming out of the gasifier sump. This valve "stick" can be made of tungsten carbide to handle the abrasive service. Smart instrumentation can keep track of the wear rate such that the "stick" can be advanced to maintain the correct flow rate. The slag slurry is dewatered with a screen and conveyed to the slag slump. The water and any fines that pass the screen go to the fines slurry tank (see Fig. 1 and Fig. 2).
