Method to Exploit Optical Head Mounted Displays to Optimize Information Exchange

Over the last decade, electronic pens were developed to bridge the gap between written and electronic records. This disclosure further explores this space, with the next step in related technologies.

Specifically, this disclosure describes a means to use optical head mounted displays (OHMD) to capture written text to digital form. In doing so, this system simplifies the digitization of written records, such as medical records that must be kept confidential or signatures input to point of sale (POS) devices.

The novel contribution is a system that enables a physical pen and paper experience, immediately digitizes the input, and thus simplifies overall work flows associated with the electronic collection of written information. Furthermore, when this system is used as described, with an "inkless" pen, the destruction of documents to maintain confidentiality and security is no longer required. Thus, the user is granted a productive and rich experience, while costs of complying with regulations are reduced.

The solution proposed in this disclosure is to use physical paper and a stylus (i.e., a pen without ink), and a wearable computer within an optical head-mount display (OHMD). These, combined with precision motion tracking software, can track the pen's endpoint and movement across the paper as the user writes. As the use enters information on the paper form, the OHMD displays the ink overlay image for the user experience. The result is a fully digitized form for the back office processing, with no paper trail of personal identity information.

Method Steps

1. User uses stylus or inkless pen to "write" information on a form or blank page. This may be a specialized stylus, or a standard writing device. To enable the advantages envisioned, however, the inventors deem that it does not leave a written record on the form or blank page.

2. A camera on the wearable computer notes and records the movement of the stylus. This recording action may be:

A. Started by an explicit prompt (e.g., spoken queue, button depression, head movement, etcetera), or

B. A continuous process, which the user elects to bring to the forefront (e.g., the computer is always looking for movements which may be interpreted as that of a stylus, and the user merely says, "Show what is being interpreted".)

3. The wearable computer, through the optical display, shows a written record of text which has been simulated by the stylus. For example, if a user inklessly signs a name, then the computer traces the stylus through the motion of the first letter, then the second letter, and each subsequent letter.
