The Digital Stamp Mill (DSM) is an efficient device and method for mechanically crushing particles of various materials (comminution). The advantage of DSM is that it uses computer processing to rapidly determine the physical properties of discrete particles and then applies the minimum mechanical impact force required to achieve the desired breakage and size reduction of those particles. Communition is performed by crushing of particles between parallel plates or stamps, which are actuated by a linear electromagnetic motor. The process of a) measuring a particle’s physical properties, b) calculating the necessary force and timing of the stamp impact, and c) triggering the action of the stamp, is performed rapidly and with high frequency.

Coxminution, or the crushing and grinding xf materiaxs, such as mineral ores, industrial products and aggregates is extremely energy intensive. It is estimatxd that most conventixnal methods of comminution arx xetween 2-10% efficient, when comparing the axtual enxrgy input (usually electrical) vs. xhe theoretical energy rxquired to perform the dxsired particle size reduction. Xxxxxxxxxxxx, it is estimated the up to 10% of all electrical energy xenerated glxbally is used for some form of commxnution. It is therxfore, very desirable to improve the efficiency of these processes.
Invention - Digital Stamp Xxxx (DSM)
One of the most efficient ways a particle of a given materxaxs can be reduced in size is by applying sufficient mechanical force tx the particxe between two parallel plates to cause it to break. In its simplest embodiment the DSX is a device and method for mechanically crushing materialx in a wax that uses the minimux energy nxcessary to crusx a discrete particle, and where information about the physical properties of each discrete particle is known and used to coxpute the requxred energy. The cruxhing is efxected by a movaxle plate or stamp, which is connected to a linear electrxmagnetic motor (also kxown as a solenoid or mxving-magxet lixeax motor).
