Residential and commercial security systems are designed to deter individuals from entering an unauthorized area. However, it is very easy for an authorized user to accidentally trigger a false alarm. For example, in a residential system consider the owner who forgets to disarm the alarm system before taking the dog for an early morning walk. When the alarm goes off, it is likely to wake the rest of the family and possibly some neighbors. Reducing such false alarms is desirable, but not at the expense of reducing the security provided by the alarm system.

False alarms are not only inconvenient, but also costly. For a monitored security system, the dispatch center often directs first responders to the site of the alarm. In the case of a false alarm, the first responders' time is wasted and perhaps the responders could have been helping somebody who was truly in need. This waste must be reduced whenever possible.

In addition, "smart" alarm systems are connected to the Internet and provide many enhanced services. Many of these systems are capable of communicating with a user's mobile device. The proposed system leverages such a capability and builds upon it to fill a gap in the art to help reduce false alarms.

The novel contribution is a method and system to generate notifications to an authorized user's mobile device when a false alarm is about to be triggered. The purpose of the false alarm notification system is to reduce the number of false alarms in a home or commercial security system. By receiving the mobile notification, the user has the opportunity to change the behavior that is currently leading to the false alarm. The core novel features of the system include the abilities to:

1. Determine that a user is about to generate a false alarm

2. Generate a preemptive mobile notification before triggering a false alarm

3. Recommend steps to change behavior to avoid a false alarm

The system leverages combined sensor data on the user's mobile device and the security system to determine whether the user is engaging in an activity that could create a false alarm. When the system detects such a condition, it sends a notification to the mobile device alerting the user to the instance and suggesting how the user can change the current behavior to prevent the false alarm.
