1. Background Information

1.1 Issue or Problem Statement

When simulate robot cell in a virtual 3D environment like ABB RobotStudio, usually there are dozens of parts, and there are thousands of 3D geometries in a part, it is frequently demands to edit/change property of 3D objects in a small space in batches, e.g., to set welding parameters of all the welding seams in a specified cabinet of a ship, it demands to select all welding seams in a cubic. This invention presents a method to assist operator to select 3d geometries quickly in a small space of a virtual 3D environment.

1.2 Current Practice or Prior Art

Currently the problem is solved by two ways:

(1) Select all the objects in a specified space manually by clicking the objects one by one; it is error prone, tiring and tedious.

(2) Create a regular cubic by manually specify its position and size then automatically search all 3d objects in this zone. It needs to input the 3d coordinates and size of the cubic precisely by user, it is complex and difficult when user is not clear about the current coordinates setting and sometimes it is impossible.
