The present invention relates generally to a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system and more particularly to a system and technique for interacting with a patient and reducing claustrophobia undergoing an MRI scan.

Generally, a patient undergoing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan is briefed about the scanning procedure before starting to prevent distress that may be caused by unfamiliarity with the scanning procedure. The general briefing may be given inside an MRI suite as depicted in Figure 1, after the patient mounts onto an MRI table as depicted in Figure 2, or outside the MRI suite during patient preparation.

However, the general briefing may not include information specific to scan procedure of the patient and consequently the patient may miss out on key information and Do's and Don'ts pertaining to the specific scan procedure of the patient. For example, the patient may miss on information, such as, the starting time and process of starting the scan, parts of body of the patient that will undergo scanning, equipment or devices to be placed onto the patient before scan and during scan. Do's and Don'ts may include disciplinary procedures that the patient requires to follow, such as, remaining still during scan, and ways of reacting in emergency or when uneasy during scan. Missing out on specific information increases patient anxiety levels which further increases when the general briefing is provided to the patient.

A conventional technique includes an MRI digital video projection system. The system provides good quality display to the patient to inform, instruct, test, and comfort the patient. The system may be used to stimulate the brain with microsecond onset times to provide improved diagnosis of brain function. The technique also includes an MRI motion tracker and patient augmented visual feedback system. The system enables monitoring patient body part motion, providing real time feedback to the patient and / or technician to substantially improve diagnostic yield of scanning sessions, particularly for children and mentally challenged individuals. Further, the technique includes an MR forward predictive noise canceling microphone system that removes intense MRI acoustic noise, thereby, improving patient communication, patient safety and enabling coding of speech output. However, the conventional technique is ineffective in reducing patient anxiety during scan or when the patient is briefed about scanning procedure in the MRI suite.

It would be desirable to have a technique that provides an engagement between the patient and the MRI system to allow patient interaction as well as provide comfort to the patient undergoing scan.
