Rotary 3 position Gear Shifter mechanism with optimized solenoid use. In this concept requires only 2 solenoids in providing end of travel hard stops for a 3 position shifter. It should be noted the third solenoid in the concept is for P/N locking in a manner that is not covered in the above mentioned Kostal patent.

This concept is a 3 position polystable shifter with a Park button in the center of the knob or located on the shifter bezel.

Terms and Naming

Park (all solenoids passive/engaged)
With the key off all three solenoids are passive. Solenoid 1 engages one of the 4 locking holes in the Park/Neutral locking slot. This blocks rotation of the shift knob.
With the vehicle in the run position, brake not depressed, the cluster could display a message such as "depress brake to select gear.

The shifter turns off solenoid 1 and 2.
The shifter also turns off Park display and displays Neutral.
Note Solenoid 2 engaged in end of travel slot 1 provides end of travel hard stops.
