Steam engine with pressure relief valve and detection of steam leak
In a domestic appliance comprising a steam engine, such as a garment care device, scale is retained in the body of the steam engine when water evaporates. Along time, scale might accumulate and eventually block the outlet of the steam engine. The pressure inside the steam engine may rise, leading to opening of the safety valve. As the blockage could be partial, some steam may still be coming out of the iron, and so the user may continue to use the appliance, ignoring / unaware of the safety valve activation / steam leakage from the steam generator. This is an undesirable situation.
Problems or disadvantages overcome by the solution
This solution allows improving safety by triggering an earlier stop of the device in case pressure inside the steam engine is getting too high.
The main element(s) of the solution
The solution proposes a steam engine comprising:
- A pressure relief valve self-opening if pressure inside the steam engine exceeds a given pressure threshold,
- Means for measuring parameters, at the output of the valve, reflecting a leak of steam (eg. temperature, humidity, conductivity…)
- If the measured parameters are above a certain threshold, generating a signal to cut the power supply of the steam engine.
