Software variables can containing meaning, e.g. aCustomer or aCar, to describe to a developer working on the code what these repesent in context of the application usage. This is more expalanatory than using variable names such as a, b or c. For a developer in another language working on the code, for example a Chinese team working on a program originally written in the USA, or vice-verse, the descriptive meaning assigned to the variable is lost to the other developer. Our idea is to allow variable names to be translated easily so that developers who are only fluent in their primary language can read and maintain and author code without having to use just the primary language the program was written or developed in.

Software development and serviceability is made more efficient by developers using meaningful software variable names, functions names and good commented code. This works well for the case where all developers and people servicing the software have the same common first language. In the case where software development is carried out in multiple geographies or serviced in a different geography from the original development team, it is common for not all people to share the same first language. In this case there is a loss of efficiency since the software variable names and function names become more difficult to interpret.

Ideally the person working with the code, e.g, developer or service engineer would be able to view the code with variable namesand function names in their own first language. The purpose of this invention is to allow people with different first languages to view the software as if it was developed in their own language. Using this invention, viewing the software code in the first language is possible even when software is developed by people with different first languages. This therefore regains the efficiency that was previously available to whole teams sharing the same first language.

In this invention, we introduced a layer sitting between the compiler and the source code. Let us call this layer "language translator". The programmers are allowed to name the variable and functions in a shared source code in more than one languages. One can define a variable with aChinese name, and other can name a Germany variable.. When pre-compiling the hybrid language source code, the language translator generates a unique IDfor these function name and variable name to a form that is understandable by the compiler.

The form is stored in code repository where the source code can be extracted and presented into multiple languages. So the invention allows the source code to be shared and presented in multiple languages. For example, a version in the code repository contains the name of variable and function in the native language (e.g. Chinese), which was created by the person who checked the code in. If another person requests to see the source code in e.g. German, the source code will go through translator phase which uses a dictionary to translate the non-German function and code name to German before presenting the source code to the second person.

The invention also allow to edit the source code in more than one languages: Following on the scenario above, the second personmay modify the source code in his/her native language, e.g. German. He/she may remove some code, and/or add new code in chosen native language, i.e. German, and check in the source code to code repository. The code repository is able to work out which lines are changed, then save the changed lines in the second person's native language, i.e. German, and leave the lines...
