In this article, a method of changing the brightness of part of the screen is introduced to save power for mobile devices basing on the fact that generally users are only interested in some particular parts of the screen when they are browsing mobile devices. This method will allow users to define a pattern of bright and dark area of the screen by drawing these areas in the configuration wizard, the birghtness of the bright and dark area and the gradient between them can also be configured. Then a mask will be generated from the pattern and will be appied to the signal to change the brightness before it lits the screen.

Nowadays, the size of the mobile device screen becomes larger and larger, which enhances users' experience but with the cost of higher power consumption. Given that screens take up a large amount of power consumption in today's mobile devices, some technologies have been introduced to reduce the power consumption of the screen either by lowering the brightness of the whole screen after a period of inactivity or simply turning it off. Treating the screen as a whole is a simple way but not quite smart, users will face a dilemma: either accept and withstand the darkness and inconvenience or increase the whole screen's brightness regardless the power shortage.

In this disclosure, a method to improve power efficiency is introduced basing on the following core ideas,

1. In many use cases like browsing web page, users will only focus on some part of the screen, for example, the middle. So the operating system of the mobile device can add some mask to lower the brightness of the pixels in this area before they are displayed on the screen, while leaving the remaining area stay dark/black.

2. The brightness change can be gradual, not saltatory. In the case of web page browsing, the area which users do not focus on is still useful, users can peek at that area when they are browsing. In this case, the dark area still provide some sort of information. Besides, the customer will have a chance to preview if they are interested in the incoming content or not. If not, they don't to need to bother scrolling it up to the bright area thus reduce power consumption to some extend.

3. It can be adjusted when necessary. For example, users can touch the floating icon and change to configuration mode and then enlarge or narrow the bright area. This can be configured for different APP with different screen layout.


Step 1. The power saving mode is triggered by the system due to the remaining power reaches a threshold or triggered by the users manually.


Step 2. Users is prompted with choices of default way and customized way of power saving method.

If the users choose the default way, the remaining process will follow the traditional way of power management. If the customer choose the customized way, some additional steps of setting will need to be followed.

Step 3. If there is an predefined pattern available, users can just select their favorite/appropriate pattern and then go directly to Step 5.
