Damper Dust-Tube Integrated Suspension Ride Height Sensor

The state-of-the-art suspension ride height sensors are of rotary designs [Figure 1]. These sensors are

used in electronically controlled suspensions systems, such as semi-active and active suspensions, and

for dynamic headlamp aiming. The rotary sensors are connected to a sprung and un-sprung body in the

vehicle, commonly the body or the frame and a control arm. The output of the rotary sensor is nonlinear

and sensitive to bushing compliance and tolerance stackup in the suspension system, thus reducing the

quality of control systems that utilize the senor output. As an ‘add-on’ component to the suspension

system, the rotary sensor is challenging to package and susceptible to environmental damage.

Moreover, the attachments require additional fasteners, brackets and features on frame / body /

suspension components; adding cost and labor to these components. Labor is also required in the OEM

assembly plant.

This idea takes existing sensing technology and puts it on the shock absorber and shock absorber dust-

tube to eliminate the current state of technology - a rotary height sensor. An electronic receiving device

is over-molded and integrated into the flexible and top-mount attached dust-tube of the shock absorber

for protection. The receiving device consists of electronics and a "mylar" strip over-molded in the dust

tube. A magnet is then attached to the damper body, possibly the bump cap. [Figure 2] As the body of

the shock absorber moves up and down, the receiver picks up the changing magnetic field location /
