This publication defines how to create a direct, straight tunnel with 3D scanning

without pre-planned tunnel line or any other auxiliary equipment (e.g. tachymeter).

It is a common problem that an operator of a tunneling drill rig can do only one

round at a time with drill bit navigation, or using 3D scanning navigation needs a

planned tunnel line, which corresponds tachymeter measurements when mine model

is created for 3D navigation.

This publication presents a way to plan a straight tunnel line for N rounds, for

example 100 meter of “straight tunnel” with -1.0 deg inclination. For the operator of

a tunneling drill rig, the process is very easy to use, as easy as the “drill bit

navigation” commonly used today.

In the presented method, the operator points the direction of the desired tunnel line

with the boom (or uses drill rig direction for defining that) and enters the desired

tunnel inclination (or the aimed inclination can be defined by from boom/drill rig

inclination). The drill rig (e.g. a control unit therein) generates a tunnel line plan

with this information and uses 3D navigation to set-up a mine model for 3D

navigation.

With the present method, the operator needs to do direction definition of the tunnel

only once and then just use normal 3D navigation for the next N rounds. Thus, the

method removes the problem of drill bit navigation to go straight forward and

removes the need to use drill bit navigation.
