The invention discloses a process for coating solid lubricants along with surface modification techniques for high contact stress applications. The substrate is optionally heat treated by carbonitriding. A diamond like carbon (DLC) coating is coated on a heat treated substrate. The thickness of the DLC coating is in the range of 2 - 4 micrometer. A solid lubrication coating which includes a composition containing graphite, MoS2, silver or PTFE is applied on the DLC layer. The solid lubricant coating is applied by an additive manufacturing process such as magnetic sputtering or laser cladding. The process and method disclosed prevents corrosion and enables reduction in wear and slippage. The high contact stress applications may include wind turbine gears or bearings.
