The present disclosure relates to a blocking awareness spectrum assignment algorithm for flexible grid optical networks. The spectrum assignment calculations are implemented using Boolean operations which minimizes running time and complexity leading to simple, fast and efficient application programming. The algorithm performs a local optimization to maximize the network resource usage of the current demand and also considers future demands. The forecasting act of the future demands moves the local optimization point towards a global one.
