Abstract

In Internet of Things (IoT) deployments, IoT devices usually send small Internet Protocol (IP) packets to a network server (through an IoT gateway (GW)) at regular intervals. Each small IP packet has an IP header and transport protocol, which adds overhead to bandwidth and Input/Output (I/O) performance on the IoT GW - network server Wide Area Network (WAN) link. Presented herein is an IoT GW - network server framing protocol with application service data unit (SDU) multiplexing to mitigate the problem of IP overhead as well as to reduce the I/O overhead. This provides a significant reduction in WAN bandwidth utilization and improves overall IoT network performance with reduced I/O processing.
