Flexible Handle for RF connector

Introduction Slide on RF connector installation and removal requires finger room around the connectors which reduces

the useable circuit board component height/space. Adding a flexible handle eliminates the need for finger

grip space during connector removal.

Background The removal of slide on RF connectors causes chassis design issues due to the amount of finger grip area

needed around the connector body for connector removal, see figure 1. In most designs there are recessed

areas incorporated into the chassis or cover which exposes the RF connector body for finger grip during

removal. The recess area restricts the component placement in that area due to the lowered area under the

chassis/cover.

Technical Discussion The flexible handle is a thin flat piece of material (Mylar or similar) that could be die cut from sheet

material, see figure 3. It is light weight and can be used in a wide temperature range.

The handle would have a center cutout that would be sized to have an interference fit on the barrel of the

connector see figure 4. Radial cuts in the material would allow the handle to fit connector barrel sizes at

maximum and minimum tolerance diameters, see figure 5.
