ABSTRACT

A small diameter borescope probe fitted with cobra like bellows will allow the scope tip to

reaching inside tight spaces within a gas turbine and prevent the scope tip from falling into gaps.

BACKGROUND

A borescope probe can enter access holes and flex into locations when inside a gas turbine

engine. A small diameter probe is at risk for falling into gaps between rotating and non-rotating

parts. When a probe is in a slot when deployed into a remote location it is difficult to extract the

probe without a significant physical manipulation that can lead to probe being moved out of the

desired working position.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

A 4mm borescope probe is small which allows the probe to enter through small access holes and

to flex into tight locations when inside a gas turbine engine. The probe is fitted with a cobra like

bellows which inflates to prevent the scope tip from falling into gaps and deflates to allow the

scope tip to reach inside tight spaces within the gas turbine. The bellows can also control the

fixed resting position of the tip when executing work at a dedicated location. The bellows can

allow the probe to remain useful without a significant physical manipulation that can interrupt

the inspection and repair process. If the inflated collar becomes jammed it can be deflated or it

can be removed from the borescope without leaving damaging material in the gas turbine.
