The present disclosure relates to flexible link aggregation. Specifically, the flexible link aggregation allows Link Aggregation Group (LAG) members to be added or removed dynamically, on-demand, without user intervention. The flexible link aggregation builds on top of IEEE 802.3AD and IEEE 802.1AX, the contents of which are incorporated by reference herein, to add congestion detection at runtime and intelligence in the network for self-healing and optimization. The flexible link aggregation utilizes a pool manager which contains unused links between nodes terminating a LAG. Member ports can be added/removed dynamically based on congestion and/or LAG operational state changes, utilizing the unused links.
