Method and System for Utilizing Retention Vault Management in Dispersed Storage Network Memory

Disclosed is a method and system for utilizing retention vault management in a dispersed storage network (DSN) memory.

Retention vault (RV) is a vault configured with a retention policy, where the vault is a logical container of data written to the DSN memory. The retention policy is used to restrict operations applied for data written to the RV based on time such as, but not limited to, a minimum retention time, a default retention time, and a maximum retention time. Additionally, the restriction operations defined by the retention policy may include, but not limited to, restrictions on data overwrite operations, restrictions on data and RV delete operations, restrictions on new data revision operations and restrictions on data metadata updates.

In an embodiment, the method and system identifies a data operation request such as, but not limited to, a read, a write, an overwrite, a delete and a metadata update received at the DSN memory. Moving on, the data operation request is processed by a dispersed storage (DS) processing unit to determine whether a vault is associated with the request. Once the vault is determined, the DS processing unit determines whether the vault is RV or not. If the vault is identified to be an RV, the DS processing unit determines the retention policy for the RV. Similarly, if the vault is not an RV, then the DS processing unit handles the request in a normal manner.

Further, the DS processing unit examines the request to verify if the request includes a requested data retention period (RDRP). If the DS processing unit identifies that the request does not include an RDRP, then the DS processing unit uses a default retention time from the policy to set data retention policy (DRP). S...
